Ford Motor Company has announced that their Ford Fiesta will be arriving in North American showrooms in the summer of 2010. Its dynamic user interface was created by global automotive supplier Visteon Corporation with Altia HMI development and code generation tools.
The Fiestas red-on-black center stack displays serve as the hub for a wide array of climate and entertainment functions. Audio, SYNC, HVAC and other vehicle setting displays are accessible from a single dynamic screen. These functions are all accessible via traditional button inputs or through integrated voice recognition. The graphical content and animation of the multi-function screens were designed and implemented for Ford using the Altia HMI tool suite. Altia Design was used to create the custom graphical menu system to access the wide array of features in this unique new display. The interface shows surprising depth featuring soft buttons, pop-ups, indicators, scrolling menus and custom graphics. Altias DeepScreen software was used to generate C code for the graphics to exactly produce the model created in Altia Design. This was a key factor in the HMI deployment.

The Fiestas advanced level of HMI is traditionally unheard of in the small car segment because high end hardware costs are prohibitive. Utilizing Altias DeepScreen miniGL target helped overcome this obstacle. The miniGL target is designed to watch data down to each bit and wring the most performance possible out of low-end hardware. Fiesta developers were able to deliver state-of-the-art graphics by using Altias miniGL target, which has very minimal embedded resource requirements like a 16-bit processor, 5K RAM footprint and no RTOS. This code is now running in the Fiesta center stack and the resulting displays have won the hearts of auto enthusiasts in Europe and China.

Dave Marker, Senior Applications Engineer at Altia, supported the Fiesta center stack development efforts and saw first-hand the challenges that were overcome in this ambitious project. Ford has truly pushed the boundaries with this system with the remarkable level of content and performance that has been engineered into this solution. EMDR as a Healing Tool in Traumatic Grief

The intense and painful experiences of grief are generally considered "normal." However, when those experiences are extremely distressing, unduly interfere with day-to-day functioning or do not subside to a manageable level over time, the bereaved may be experiencing complicated or traumatic grief. Complicated grief has been proposed as a new diagnostic category in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), and suggested components of the diagnosis include (1) that sufferers experience bereavement by death; (2) that their reactions include intrusive and distressing symptoms, including yearning, longing and searching for the deceased; and (3) that the bereaved exhibit at least four marked and persistent trauma reactions, which may include: "avoidance of reminders of the deceased, purposelessness, feelings of futility, difficulty imagining a life without the deceased, numbness, detachment, feeling stunned, dazed or shocked, feeling that life is empty or meaningless, feeling a part of oneself has died, disbelief, excessive anger or bitterness related to the death, and identification symptoms or harmful behaviors resembling those suffered by the deceased" (Mitchell et al, 2004, p. 13).

Even in cases that do not fit the criteria for complicated grief as described above, the events surrounding the death may be sufficiently traumatic to interfere with daily functioning or result in unrelenting distress. As a psychotherapist specializing in grief and loss, I have found EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) to be an effective tool for alleviating trauma in grief. As in grief, trauma affects the whole person -- body, mind and spirit, and on a hierarchy of needs, trauma must be dealt with in order for the healing process of grief to proceed in a healthy, and healing, fashion.

What is EMDR?

In brief, EMDR was developed by psychologist Francine Shapiro after making a chance discovery that the lateral movement of her eyes reduced the intensity of disturbing material she was dealing with in her life (Shapiro, 1995, p. 2). Dr. Shapiro spent several years scientifically studying this phenomenon, and found that bilateral stimulation, i.e., stimulation on both sides of the body -- whether in the form of eye movements, tapping, sound or other forms -- released traumatic material from the brain in a way that made the material workable. Trauma that is locked in the brain leads to the "fight, flight or freeze" response, and EMDR helps transform traumatic images into memories that no longer have a deleterious hold on the individual.

In addition to this physiological response to trauma, the traumatized individual often develops negative beliefs about him or herself (such as "I do not deserve love, "I was at fault" etc). The beauty of EMDR is that it works on a cognitive level as well as the physiological level, not only facilitating the transformation of traumatic images in the brain, but also allowing the individual to replace negative cognitions about him or herself with positive ones (such as "I deserve love", "I did the best I could", etc.). EMDR also works on a somatic level, with the therapist guiding the client to feel the traumatic images and negative beliefs in the body, thus further facilitating the transformation of the images into non-intrusive memories, and also transforming the negative beliefs into positive, useful ones. Therapists need to be trained to practice EMDR, and follow a standardized protocol in EMDR work with clients.
Case Studies

Two cases in my practice are illustrative of the effectiveness of EMDR in resolving traumatic grief. "Carol", the mother of two small children, came to see me complaining of ongoing distress after the death of her husband nine months before. "Bill" was in a motorcycle accident, sustaining a broken leg. After being admitted to the hospital, Bill suffered a stroke and brain swelling, and died after being taken off life support two days later. Carol was concerned about her irritability, particularly toward her children, and her anger toward Bill for dying and leaving her with two small children to raise alone. She also expressed guilt regarding her anger toward Bill, which I spent time validating and normalizing, since anger is often exhibited as a normal grief response. Carol spent much time telling her story -- a useful healing tool for making meaning of a seemingly senseless situation (White, 1995). She did not exhibit signs of trauma for the first few months that we worked together. However, as the anniversary of Bill's death approached, Carol found it difficult to sleep, being awakened by intrusive images of Bill lying in the hospital bed and her shock when she learned of his condition. We explored Carol's negative cognitions around these images and Bill's sudden death. The negative belief that that most impacted Carol was her belief that Bill's death was her fault because she had a premonition that he would be in an accident, and she did nothing to prevent it. In describing the images of Bill lying in the ICU and her belief that it was her fault, Carol felt tightness in her chest and had difficulty breathing. After two 90-minute EMDR sessions, Carol was able to replace her negative belief "I was at fault" with the positive belief "I did the best I could." She reported that she still, of course, experienced memories of Bill's death, and reported she was very pleased that that she could feel sadness without guilt. Carol was thus finally able to process her grief and loss in a healthy way.

My work with "Mary" was deeply profound and moving. Mary's husband "Don" suffered with Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS) for three years, and Mary witnessed the horrible, inexorable ravaging of Don's body while his mind stayed strong. Mary's expressed purpose for coming to see me was that she was unable to feel Don's presence in her life. Mary described Don as her soul mate, and I assured her that because of the strength of their bond, she would find a place for Don in her heart and feel his presence as a support in order to move forward. However, it was clear that she would first have to deal with the traumatic images that prevented her from fulfilling this step in her grief process. The most disturbing image, and target for our EMDR work, was finding Don lying in a pool of blood on the bathroom floor after falling out of his wheelchair. I taught Mary the "butterfly" technique, in which the client crosses his or her arms across the chest in a hug and taps alternately below each shoulder, simulating the bilateral stimulation used in formal EMDR sessions. I instructed Mary to use this technique at home as a resource when traumatic images arose. After two sessions, with Mary working at home with the butterfly hug when disturbing images and emotions arose, Mary reported that those images had receded as mere memories that were no longer unduly disturbing.

Mary came into our next session glowing, and reported that she had felt a tug at the back of her shirt while sitting quietly one day and "knew it was Don, back in my life." She reported that she subsequently felt Don's presence coming to her every night before she fell asleep. Our trauma work was done, and Mary was well on the way to healing her grief.

Conclusion

My work with both Carol and Mary, as well as many others, has enhanced my confidence in my therapeutic skills in identifying and working with traumatic grief, and has increased my trust and faith in the effectiveness of EMDR as a healing tool in grief.

Treatment

In a small number of cases (usually of the milder variety), Peyronies goes away without treatment. And in some cases, the degree of curvature is not severe enough to require treatment.

But in other cases, a doctor may recommend a number of treatments. These range from oral medications to injections to surgery. One option sometimes recommended is traction.

Traction

Most treatments for a severely bent member havent undergone rigorous clinical trials, so assessing their effectiveness is difficult. But at least one trial involving manhood traction therapy showed promise. Involving 55 men with Peyronies disease, the study found an average decrease in curvature of 20 degrees; plaque disappeared in 48% of the patients. And the rate of those unable to achieve penetration fell from 62% to 20%.

For the study, the men used a traction device, often called a male organ extender. The device attaches at the base of the member and again underneath the head. It is then extended, pulling and stretching the manhood. The men in the study were instructed to wear the device for 6-9 hours each day for 6 months.

Based on the results of this study, it seems that traction may be an option for some men with a very bent member. However, there are drawbacks; not all men responded to the treatment, and there is some degree of pain and discomfort associated with member stretching.

Men with Peyronies should definitely consult with a doctor to see if they should consider any kind of treatment.

One example would be for a worm to send a copy of itself to everyone listed in your e-mail address book. Trojan Horse

Assessment is the process of documenting, usually in measurable terms, knowledge, skills, attitudes and beliefs.

Assessments can be classified in many different ways. The most important distinctions are: (1) formative and summative; (2) objective and subjective; (3) referencing (criterion-referenced, norm-referenced, and ipsative); and (4) informal and formal.

Formative and summative
There are two main types of assessment:

Summative assessment - Summative assessment is generally carried out at the end of a course or project. In an educational setting, summative assessments are typically used to assign students a course grade.
Formative assessment - Formative assessment is generally carried out throughout a course or project. Formative assessment, also referred to as educative assessment, is used to aid learning. In an educational setting, formative assessment might be a teacher (or peer) or the learner, providing feedback on a student's work, and would not necessarily be used for grading purposes.
Summative and formative assessment are referred to in a learning context as "assessment of learning" and "assessment for learning" respectively.

A common form of formative assessment is diagnostic assessment. Diagnostic assessment measures a student's current knowledge and skills for the purpose of identifying a suitable program of learning. Self-assessment is a form of diagnostic assessment which involves students assessing themselves. Bases of comparison
Test results can be compared against an established criterion, or against the performance of other students, or against previous performance:

Criterion-referenced assessment, typically using a criterion-referenced test, as the name implies, occurs when candidates are measured against defined (and objective) criteria. Criterion-referenced assessment is often, but not always, used to establish a persons competence (whether s/he can do something). The best known example of criterion-referenced assessment is the driving test, when learner drivers are measured against a range of explicit criteria (such as Not endangering other road users).

Norm-referenced assessment (colloquially known as "grading on the curve"), typically using a norm-referenced test, is not measured against defined criteria. This type of assessment is relative to the student body undertaking the assessment. It is effectively a way of comparing students. The IQ test is the best known example of norm-referenced assessment. Many entrance tests (to prestigious schools or universities) are norm-referenced, permitting a fixed proportion of students to pass (passing in this context means being accepted into the school or university rather than an explicit level of ability). This means that standards may vary from year to year, depending on the quality of the cohort; criterion-referenced assessment does not vary from year to year (unless the criteria change).

Ipsative assessment is self comparison either in the same domain over time, or comparative to other domains within the same student.

Informal and formal
Assessment can be either formal or informal. Formal assessment usually implicates a written document, such as a test, quiz, or paper. Debridement and Callus Foot Tissue

Debridement is a method for ridding the foot of callus foot tissue. This callus tissue can include foot tissue with scales, foot tissue with fissures (cracked heels, etc.), corns, foot tissue with lesions (foot ulcers), keratinized tissue, tyloma, kyperkeratosis or any other hardened or excessively thick foot tissue. Debridement can be used to remove dead tissue, damaged tissue, or infected tissue (as in the case of a foot ulcer). Sometimes a podiatrist will remove the callus tissue using a scalpel or manual cutting tool. Other times the podiatrist will use a drill-like instrument that gently buffs the dead or damaged skin away.

When debriding callus foot tissue extra care must be used to ensure that the damaged or infected skin does not tear or start to hemorrhage. This is especially true in patients who have diabetes and are prone to foot ulceration. The debridement of callus tissue on the feet can be attempted at home using a pumice stone or set of nail scissors to gently trim the hardened tissue. Debridement should not be attempted at home if the callus tissue is unusually infected or if it the tissue starts to hemorrhage. Debridement should never be attempted at home by people with diabetic foot or people with lymphedema (a condition that causes the foot to swell due to blockages in the lymph system).

Sometimes podiatrists choose to apply a chemical peel to callus foot tissue. This chemical peel is designed to soften the callus foot tissue before the surgical process of debridement. Callus tissue on the foot tends to be harder and thicker than callus tissue on other parts of the body. The chemical peel, therefore, should be specifically designed to soften the callus tissue of the foot.

After the chemical peel, the callus tissue is normally removed using a powered instrument with a "burr" that scrapes away the dead or damaged tissue. The entire process can take as little as twenty minutes. While debridement techniques tend to be feared as a painful process, they can be performed with the patient feeling little to no physical pain or discomfort.

The callus foot tissue should continue to receive extra care once the patient has returned home. Very little stress should be put on the affected areas for the next couple of days. Avoid adhesive bandages and pads that may further injure the foot upon their removal. Where soft shoes and socks without seams to avoid unnecessary friction on your feet. Wear comfortable, well-fitting shoes that will not only allow your feet to heal but also reduce the chance of corns, scaled tissue, fissured tissue, lesions or any other callus foot tissue forming in the future.
